How Menthol Crystals Are Made (Process Guide)

How Menthol Crystals Are Made (Process Guide)

How Menthol Crystals Are Made (Process Guide)

Menthol crystals are produced through steam distillation of Mentha arvensis (Corn Mint) leaves for mint oil, followed by gradual cooling of mint oil to isolate natural L-Menthol in crystalline form. These crystals are filtered, cleaned, and dried until purity levels exceed 99%.

Remaining liquid after this process is dementholized mint oil, resulting in dual production from each batch. Most of the natural menthol supply in the world comes from India, primarily from mint cultivation in Uttar Pradesh.

Should you purchase menthol for pharmaceutical, oral care, or FMCG uses, understanding how menthol crystals are manufactured can help you evaluate the product and select an appropriate supplier. This article will take you through all stages of menthol crystal production.

What are menthol crystals?

Colorless needle crystals of natural menthol are menthol crystals. Menthol is a chemical compound which imparts a cool feeling to mint. It melts at 42–44°C and is highly soluble in alcohol and oil.

What raw material is used to make menthol crystals?

Natural menthol crystals are derived from the oil of Mentha arvensis, which is commonly referred to as cornmint oil. It has been used because its oil contains up to 70-80% menthol content, which is much higher than that of peppermint or spearmint.

The planting of Mentha arvensis occurs between January and March, and harvesting takes place between May and June. Main regions where it grows are Barabanki, Sambhal, Rampur, Badaun and Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, India.

Menthol crystals manufacturing process: step by step

The menthol crystals manufacturing process has eight stages, from the field to the sealed drum.

Step 1: Cultivation and harvesting

Mentha arvensis takes around 90–110 days to grow. Harvesting is done during that stage when the maximum amount of oil is present in the leaves, ideally during dry, sunny days.

Step 2: Partial drying of the herb

After cutting the herb, it is left in the field for several hours so that it loses some moisture. This makes the job of distilling easier.

Step 3: Steam distillation

This process begins by putting the plant into the distillation tank. Steam passes through this tank to transport the volatile oil from the plant to the condenser. This volatile oil then condenses to form oil and water mixture.

Step 4: Oil separation

The lighter mint oil floats at the top of the water layer and is separated. The raw mentha arvensis oil is further filtered to get rid of any moisture or plant material.

Step 5: Freezing and crystallisation

The filtered oil is gradually cooled in the crystallization tanks, usually down to –5 to 0°C. As the oil temperature reduces, the naturally existing L-menthol crystallizes into needle crystals. Gradual cooling results in formation of bigger crystals.

Step 6: Separation of crystals

The liquid in the crystal mass is removed by draining or through the process of centrifuging. The liquid that is thus obtained is known as dementholised mint oil (DMO).

Step 7: Purification and drying

These crude crystals are purified through washing and re-crystallization several times to purify them of any remaining impurities like oil and other compounds. The crystals are dried to make them free-flowing.

Step 8: Testing, packing and storage

The batches are tested in the laboratory before packaging in airtight, food-grade HDPE drums lined for transportation. The drums are kept in a cool and dry place to prevent crystal formation in the drums.

How is the quality of menthol crystals tested?

Good menthol crystals are tested against pharmacopeia standards such as IP, BP and USP. The key parameters are:

Parameter

Typical specification

Appearance

Colourless, needle-shaped crystals

Odour

Characteristic, cooling mint

Purity (assay by GC)

99% minimum L-menthol

Melting point

42–44°C

Optical rotation

–50° to –51°

Non-volatile residue

0.05% maximum

CAS number

2216-51-5

Ask your supplier for a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for every batch. It proves the crystals match these specifications.

What are menthol crystals used for?

Once made, natural menthol crystals go into hundreds of everyday products:

  • Pharmaceuticals: pain balms, cough syrups, lozenges, inhalers and cooling gels.

  • Oral care: toothpaste, mouthwash and breath fresheners.

  • Personal care: cooling shampoos, talcum powder and after-shave.

  • Food and confectionery: mint candies and chewing gum.

  • Tobacco and pan masala: for a consistent cooling note.

FAQs

How long does it take to make menthol crystals?

Four months are required from seed crystals to final crystals. It takes a few hours for distillation, but crystallization and purification take several days.

How much menthol crystal comes from mint oil?

Approximately 1 kg of the oil from Mentha arvensis will produce about 0.6 to 0.7 kg of menthol crystals.

Are menthol crystals natural or synthetic?

Both types are available. Natural menthol crystals originate from mint oil, whereas synthetic menthol is produced from petrochemical or plant ingredients. Bhagat Aromatics provides 100% natural menthol crystals.

Why do menthol crystals form only at low temperatures?

Menthol remains soluble in mint oil when kept at room temperature. Cooling decreases the solubility, thus the menthol crystallizes out as solid.

What is the by-product of menthol crystal production?

The main by-product is dementholised mint oil (DMO), which is used in flavours, fragrances and oral care.

How should menthol crystals be stored?

Store them in airtight drums below 25°C, away from heat and sunlight. This stops caking and loss of aroma.
